Flooded Mine "Seegrotte Hinterbruehl" (English and German) |
In 1912 an underground blasting operation in the gypsum mine "Hinterbruehl" went awry and caused water to gush forth from behind the rock.
The lower level galleries of the mine were flooded, creating the largest subterranean lake in Europe.
As a consequence the mine ("Seegotte") became a tourist attraction.
During World War II this protected subterranean site was used by German military forces to produce one of the first
jetfighters of the world there, the "Heinkel HE 162". |
