Hernstein is a small village in which Hernstein Palace ("Schloss Hernstein"), hosting the IISC, is located. It is surrounded by pine forests which have been a centre of resin production. |  |
| City of Berndorf (German only) |
Berndorf is the town closest to the conference site. It is famous for the various social constructions (Photo: School classroom in Pompeian style) built in the 19th century by an industrial tycoon for his workers. |  |

The Neusiedler See is the largest lake in the east of Austria, located in the dry and sunny plain on the border with Hungary. It is home to numerous bird species and a popular area for water sports. |

Forchtenstein Castle has been a stronghold since medivial times. It is still private property of the Lords of Esterhazy whose "treasure chamber" is open to the public. |

| Railroad to Schneeberg (2076m) (English and German) |
The mountain railway, built in 1897, leads close to the peak of Lower Austria's highest mountain, the Schneeberg (2076m). The peak can be reached in an easy hike of about 45min from the station.

Flooded Mine "Seegrotte Hinterbruehl" (English and German) |
In 1912 an underground blasting operation in the gypsum mine "Hinterbruehl" went awry and caused water to gush forth from behind the rock.
The lower level galleries of the mine were flooded, creating the largest subterranean lake in Europe.
As a consequence the mine ("Seegotte") became a tourist attraction. During World War II this protected subterranean site was used by German military forces to produce one of the first jetfighters of the world there, the "Heinkel HE 162". |
